OCR: The flowers of agave plants emerge on a long stalk in the center of the plant. Many agaves grow in deserts, including the century plant of the American southwest (Agave parryi). The century plant gets its name because this plant is said to flower only once in a hundred years. In fact, most live between eight and twenty years before a tall flower stalk grows up from the low clump of leaves. After flowering and seed dispersal, the whole plant dies. Other agaves include the Lechuguilla of the Chihuahuan desert.
